In a press release today from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said “Another month, another record. And another. And another. Decades-long trends of climate change are reaching new climaxes, fuelled by the strong 2015/2016 El Niño,”. The El Niño event, which turned up the Earth’s thermostat, has now disappeared, but “climate change, caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases, will not,” he stressed. This means more heatwaves, more extreme rainfall and potential for higher impact tropical cyclones. Arctic sea ice melted early and fast, another indicator of climate change. Carbon dioxide levels, which are driving global warming, have reached new highs.

The H21 Leeds City Gate report was launched on 11th July 2016. This outlines the feasibility of converting the gas grid to deliver hydrogen for heating and cooking, starting with the Leeds city region and then for conversion to take place across the country incrementally. The report finds that converting the UK gas grid to hydrogen will be a major step towards meeting the UK’s carbon reduction targets. This conversion could start in Leeds by 2026, with total estimated conversion costs of £2bn for the whole of Leeds.

The Orkney Islands of Scotland have been chosen for the development of a new European-wide hydrogen project, building on the existing Orkney Surf ‘n’ Turf initiative. This wider European project is called BIG HIT (Building Innovative Green Hydrogen systems in an Isolated Territory: a pilot for Europe). BIG HIT is a five-year project, involving 12 participants based across six EU countries, and starts in May 2016.
