Scotland set to support green H2 revolution in Germany

The Scot2Ger study, led by industry and supported by the public sector, has found that Scotland is perfectly placed to become an exporter of green hydrogen to a ready-made market in Germany. This collaborative study of Scottish production and export potential shows that Scotland can answer the call of the growing German market for clean, green hydrogen as early as 2025. It concludes that Scotland’s renewable energy and hydrogen capabilities could supply globally significant demand as Germany fast-tracks the switch from fossil fuels.

It's All Energy at the SEC Glasgow

All-Energy is back again in style! The All-Energy Exhibition and conference at the SEC in Glasgow on the 11th and 12th of May was exactly that - ALL ENERGY for both days of this superb event.

Three years after their last in-person event at the SEC in May 2019, All-Energy has come back stronger with more attendees and an excellent conversion rate from interested to attending. There was a real buzz throughout the SEC for both days.

Our Scottish Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Association stand welcomed a steady stream of inquiries. These included visitors from Spain, Germany, Canada, and China as individuals and also representing businesses and associations.  There were also many research students with challenging questions, new membership inquiries, and of course old friends. Some of our visitors stayed for a cup of tea in tartan mugs and enjoyed a Scottish Energy Bar, courtesy of ‘Tunnochs’.

Our CEO, Nigel Holmes, was away from the stand for much of the time giving presentations in three of the Showfloor Theatres and in conference sessions. He missed several colleagues who visited the stand, but we hope to have him cloned for next year.

Our SHFCA members were well represented both in the exhibition and also in the action-packed conference sessions. Judith Patten has again put together a truly comprehensive conference programme. This included three Hydrogen and Fuel Cell sessions over the two days, another first for All-Energy. The conference sessions fielded excellent speakers with a dynamic format that helped to share lots of new information and insights.

Katie took some time away from the SHFCA stand to check out our other member stands and displays and to take a few photos. It was exciting to see what was happening with Hydrogen and the significant progress which has been made in the last 2 years, and apologies if we missed any of your exhibits.

Feedback from our SHFCA members during the show was really positive, including a comment from Pat Drury of Northern Valves & Fitting Company Ltd: ‘SHFCA membership is excellent value. Keep up the good work’. We will, thanks Pat.

Thanks also to the SHFCA members who exhibited in the H2 Tech Showfloor area and other locations around the exhibition hall. The exhibits included the Mirai fuel cell cars, the Glasgow City Council hydrogen fuel cell refuse truck and hydrogen-diesel multibody truck, the Fuel Cell Systems HyTruck mobile hydrogen refueller, Logan Energy’s new mobile hydrogen compressor, Falcon Foodservice hydrogen cooking range, TCP with the hydrogen sentry box and mobile CCTV units, and the PlusZero display which included their stunning ‘The Vital Spark’ hydrofoil as well as the 100% hydrogen gensets.

All-Energy 2022 was again the event to be at, and has set a very high bar for what promises to be a great year for hydrogen in Scotland with lots more in person events due to take place.

We’re now looking forward to meeting more of our members at events over the course of this year, and welcoming new members who want to be part of our rapidly growing sector.

IPCC says the Time for Action is Now

The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report was released today. The report finds that 2010-2019 average annual global greenhouse gas emissions were at their highest levels in human history, but the rate of growth has slowed.

It’s now or never, if we want to limit global warming to 1.5°C (2.7°F),” said IPCC Working Group III Co-Chair Professor Jim Skea. “Without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors, it will be impossible.”

The Working Group III report on Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change provides an updated global assessment of climate change mitigation progress and pledges, and examines the sources of global emissions. It explains developments in emission reduction and mitigation efforts, assessing the impact of national climate pledges in relation to long-term emissions goals.

Bruichladdich Distillery to use Green Hydrogen

The Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay will receive £2.65M funding from the BEIS Green Distilleries Competition for the HyLaddie project to pioneer sustainable green hydrogen energy technology. SHFCA members Protium and ITP Energised will support the installation of innovative hydrogen combustion technology to heat the stills and decarbonise the distillation process. This will enable the Bruichladdich to decarbonise it’s renowned Scotch, as well as their artisanal gin, The Botanist, thus removing a major contributor to the brand’s overall carbon emissions. This pilot project will demonstrate the ability to switch from fuel oil to sustainable hydrogen energy technology, and is an early step towards Net Zero manufacturing.
