Hydrogen for Orkney

  • King Street Halls 6 King Street Kirkwall, KW15 1JF Orkney Islands (map)

The closing day of the 2017 Orkney International Science Festival will include speakers from several European islands who are coming to Orkney for the Festival. Topics will include tidal power on the island off the coast of Brittany, and a look at managing energy in islands from the Aegean to the Baltic.

The European supported BIG HIT project will tackle grid constraints by turning surplus renewable electricity into hydrogen into for use in heating and local transport, including ten hydrogen-powered vans. Jon Clipsham of EMEC and Nigel Holmes of the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association explain, with the help of local participants, how this approach builds on the pioneering work of the Surf ā€˜nā€™ Turf project.

Walking, voyaging, travelling, exploring ā€“ with stories of polar exploration and Norse navigation, building great bridges and probing the seabed ā€“ plus a return visit of Nobel laureate Prof. Peter Higgs, are all to the fore in the programme for the 2017 Orkney International Science Festival.
