The European Commission launched a bidding process on Thursday for EUR140m of project funding for research into hydrogen technology, as part of the EU's Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) (EE 10/10/07 http://www.endseurope.com/14095).

The funding is available for projects in five application areas: transportation and refuelling infrastructure; hydrogen production and distribution; stationary power generation; early markets; and cross-cutting issues. The JTI is a public-private partnership between the commission, 64 companies and 54 universities and research institutes. It is expected to invest around EUR1bn in research by 2014.
