The Dept. of Electronic & Electrical Engineering is undertaking work in the following hydrogen and fuel cell related areas:

  1. Systems integration, control and monitoring of hydrogen powered fuel cells as part of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems, including fuel cell/battery hybrid systems. This work is supported by the build and test of an operational alkaline fuel cell based CHP unit.
  2. Systems integration, control and monitoring of hydrogen powered fuel cells into battery powered electric vehicles (in hybrid mode). This work includes use of composite and steel hydrogen storage cylinders and high pressure hydrogen gas refuelling equipment. This work is supported by the build and test of a fuel cell/battery powered electric vehicle based on an AC Cobra kit car.
  3. Electrical modelling of the steady state and dynamic behaviour of fuel cells including use of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy equipment, environment chamber and cell voltage monitors. This work considers the frequency behaviour, fault performance and cell degradation processes.
  4. Development, build and testing of specific power electronic systems (both DC/DC converters and DC/AC inverters) for use with fuel cells. This is supported by cell level investigation work carried out in item 3) above.
Seeking project/development partners for collaborative research in the areas highlighted above.
