Napier University has been working in fuel cell research for around 15 years resulting in 4 PhD students – 2 currently employed in fuel cells - and another 3 currently studying in the field. We have just opened a small hydrogen laboratory at our Merchiston Campus which integrates, via an electrolyser, a photo-voltaic façade and 2 wind turbines with a small experimental solid oxide fuel cell stack. Work is being carried out investigating the various components of this demonstration facility and all students at Napier are made aware of the CO2 saved through digital meters sited within the campus. A patent has recently been filed on a low-cost method of manufacturing anodes for solid oxide fuel cells and work at Napier is concentrating on this area, as well as on cathodes and interconnects.
