Aberdeen is a global centre for energy development, and Aberdeen City Council is committed to maintaining this status and building capacity in renewables. It is a leading member of the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), a public-private partnership which was established to build on the existing energy base in Aberdeen City and Shire to produce a large, indigenous renewable energy industry. AREG is sponsoring several high-profile high-impact proposals, including the Aberdeen offshore windfarm, an Energy Futures centre for the city, new capacity in research and also supports the development of the annual All-Energy conference which is held in the City.

Aberdeen City Council is also committed to the reduction of carbon emissions through achieving the highest possible standards of energy efficiency and integration of renewable energy into its own property portfolio and operations. Recent developments include the installation of solar panels at the city's Bridge of Don Academy, installation of CHP plants to power Council housing and the purchase of electric vehicles for the council's fleet.
